Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's

I dial into First Link but cannot go anywhere?

If this occurs, ensure that you are using the correct proxy setup. Also, make sure that you have the following configured:

Open up Dial-Up Networking and right click on your First Link icon and choose Properties.
Click on the Server Types tab and ensure:

  • Enable Software Compression is ticked
  • TCP/IP is ticked
These are the only two you should have ticked in here.

Now, click on the TCP/IP Settings button, and ensure:

  • Server assigned IP address is checked
  • Server assigned name server addresses is checked
  • Use IP header compression is ticked
  • Use default gateway on remote network is ticked
These are the only four you should have ticked in here.

Now, open up your Control Panel and double click on the Network icon. Under the section 'The following network components are installed' you should only have:

  • Dial-Up Adapter, and
  • TCP/IP
If you have anything else, you should click on it to select it, and then choose remove. If you are running your computer on a network, it is advised that you seek further advice from your Network Administrator.

Double click on TCP/IP and ensure you have the following:

  • Click on IP Address - Should be set to Obtain an IP address automatically
  • Click on WINS Configuration - Should be set to Disable WINS Resolution
  • Click on DNS Configuration - Should be set to Disable DNS
After checking these, you should click ok, and then ok again. You may be prompted to reset your computer. When asked, allow the system to reset.

It is suggested that after doing this, once the computer has reset, to dial in and try again.
